I'm traveling solo in India for the first time, but India being India, you're never alone. Even if you really want to be. And I did, but it didn't work out... I'm just wrapping up a crazy week in Pushkar with the Rajasthani prince Mohit K. Sharma, an energetic Indian guy, 25, married to a lovely Danish woman he calls Chhotu (Hindi for the youngest family member). He's smart, funny, and goes out of his way to meet travelers and show them the city—and places even locals have never been to. He does it all with so much love, without expecting payment. He enjoys meeting people from abroad and rediscovers each place with you. Send him your location and he'll meet you for coffee and share some good advice along the way. This guy knows everyone, and everyone knows him. Nothing's going to happen to you with him around—you couldn't feel safer. He'll even bargain for you in shops and travel agencies and get you things that are banned in town (eggs, chicken, beer...). He knows so many places that you'll need a few packed days with him. He practically becomes your brother and forgets about his wife. Until she calls… Just because he was so lovely and came along to help me bargain at other guesthouses, I chose to stay at his place. There's no air conditioning, but I was comfortable, especially now that the nights are getting cooler. There's an en-suite bathroom, with hot water when you switch on the heater. Add to that this prince of Pushkar, who chats away in a little Hebrew and, in between, cooks, cleans a bit—and crashes out a lot. For all this, I paid 2500 rupees, including generous tips, drinks every day, endless coffee and tea, and contributions toward fuel and food—a whole lot for very little money!!! Even if you don't stay at his guesthouse, he'll still help you with anything you need. Even a crazy idea like throwing a party in the middle of nowhere… He's up for it, by the way. So if you're in Pushkar, give him a call, tell him you're friends of mine, and see how quickly you gain a brother. +91 820 967 4779
