Although the prince was not the eldest son, he grew to become widely known and loved. His abilities surpassed those of his peers, even on the battlefield. He led numerous successful military campaigns that consolidated the empire's power across Asia. In recognition of his victories, his father gave him the title “Shah Jahan,” meaning “King of the World.”A few years later, his father fell ill, and the brothers began competing for the throne. After years of fighting, Shah Jahan emerged victorious and became emperor of the Mughal Empire. His first love stood by him throughout. He called her Mumtaz Mahal, “Jewel of the Palace,” and commissioned a magnificent royal palace for her in gleaming white marble. In 1631, his beloved wife gave birth to their first son. Soon afterward, she developed complications. Shah Jahan rushed to her side when he heard and said goodbye shortly before she died. Legend says that just before her death at 38, she made one final request: that he immortalize their great love, preserving her memory for generations to come.In 1632, the emperor began building the Taj Mahal in India, a mausoleum in memory of his wife and their great love. A renowned Persian architect was hired, and around 20 thousand workers spent twenty-two years building the tomb, which became a symbol of their love. Elephants carried red sandstone, alabaster came from distant China, and white marble arrived from Rajasthan. The architect brought skilled stone polishers and artisans from as far away as Italy, and this magnificent work was completed in 1653.Many years after that remarkable story, the monument still attracts millions of visitors from around the world. They come to admire its grandeur and its gardens, spanning one hundred and seventy dunams, with paths, fountains, unexpected viewpoints and beautiful ornamental pools, as well as its symmetrical design, arches and impressive dome. Inlaid precious stones, elaborate calligraphy, white marble and the main gateway adorned with Quranic verses—every detail contributes to its unmatched splendor. After an evocative walk along the paths, you will also discover the tombs of the emperor and his beloved wife, with rectangular designs, arches and stone towers creating a picture-postcard scene. The tomb's ceiling features floral decorations, complemented by striking geometric floor tiles. Shah Jahan's tomb is larger than his wife's, and another tragic story lies behind it. Five years after he completed the mausoleum in her memory, his son deposed him and imprisoned him in a fort. From there, Shah Jahan gazed at the Taj Mahal every day until his death, when he joined his beloved in the mausoleum.

The Taj Mahal is one of the best-known sights in India and the world. This extraordinary monument draws hundreds of thousands—even millions—of visitors every year. Let's take a closer look.

The Story of the Taj Mahal

Behind this magnificent, intricately decorated monument lies a love story. Khurram, a prince of the Mughal Empire, met the love of his life at 15: a gentle young woman of captivating beauty named Arjumand Banu Begum. Legend has it that when Khurram first saw her, he hid his face, overwhelmed by her beauty. They fell in love at first sight and married five years after that legendary meeting.

Although the prince was not the eldest son, he became widely known and loved over the years. His abilities surpassed those of his peers, even on the battlefield. He led numerous successful military campaigns that strengthened the empire's hold across Asia. In recognition of his victories, his father gave him the title “Shah Jahan,” meaning “King of the World.”

A few years later, his father fell ill, and the brothers began competing for the throne. After years of fighting, Shah Jahan prevailed and became emperor of the Mughal Empire. His first love stood by him throughout. He called her Mumtaz Mahal, “Jewel of the Palace,” and commissioned a magnificent royal palace for her, built of gleaming white marble.

In 1631, his beloved wife gave birth to their first son. Shortly afterward, she developed complications. On hearing the news, Shah Jahan rushed to her side and said goodbye just before she died. Legend says that moments before her death at 38, she made one final request: that he immortalize their great love, preserving her memory for generations to come.

And so, in 1632, the emperor began building the Taj Mahal in India, a mausoleum honoring his wife and their great love. A renowned Persian architect was hired, and around 20 thousand workers spent twenty-two years building the tomb that became a symbol of their love. Elephants carried red sandstone, alabaster came from distant China, and white marble arrived from Rajasthan. The architect brought skilled stone polishers and artisans from Italy, and this magnificent work was completed in 1653.

Many years after this remarkable story, the monument still draws millions of visitors from around the world. They come to admire the magnificent palace and its gardens, which cover one hundred and seventy dunams and feature paths, fountains, unexpected viewpoints and beautiful ornamental pools, as well as its symmetrical design, arches and impressive dome. Inlaid precious stones, elaborate calligraphy, white marble and a main gateway adorned with Quranic verses—every detail contributes to its unique splendor.

After exploring the paths, you will also see the tombs of the emperor and his beloved wife. Rectangular decorative panels, arches and stone towers create a picture-postcard scene. The tomb's ceiling features floral motifs, complemented by stunning geometric floor tiles. Shah Jahan's tomb is larger than his wife's, and another tragic story lies behind it. Five years after he completed the mausoleum in her memory, his son deposed him and imprisoned him in a fort. From there, Shah Jahan gazed daily at the Taj Mahal he had built for his wife, until he died and joined her in the tomb.

Visiting the Taj Mahal

If you are planning a visit, consider hiring a local guide for around 500 rupees. Your guide will show you the impressive buildings and explain the Taj's history. Tours run throughout the day, except during prayer times. I also recommend exploring the beautiful gardens around the site, not just the Taj itself.

Opening Hours

The Taj Mahal is open every day except Friday, from 06:00 to 19:00.
