India - Mysore / Mysuru - Karnataka.

I think Mysore doesn't get enough attention, which probably explains why it's less visited on the Israeli backpacker trail. What a shame! I've been here for 4 days, and the city is wonderful! There are plenty of places to see in and around Mysore.

My recommendations

Maharaja's Palace: The palace is the main tourist attraction in the heart of the city. Truly impressive. I thought the palace in Udaipur was impressive, but this one is even more so. (No photo because photography is not allowed inside; entry costs 200 rupees.)

St. Philomena's Church:

Very beautiful, especially from the outside. The interior is currently being renovated.

Devaraja Market

A charming, colorful local market with everything from food to flowers and trinkets. Don't be tempted by the oil sellers—the oils are fake (my rickshaw driver said they're 90 percent alcohol with a little fragrance and cause severe itching after a few days).

Oil and incense factory: A nice stop to enjoy the scents and see how everything is made by hand.

Silk factory

Take a factory tour. It's amazing to see the entire process, from making the thread to the finished sari.

Chamundi Hill

A hill overlooking the city, with beautiful temples.

The zoo

Nice, but nothing more. Let's just say the Ramat Gan Safari is better.

Srirangapatna

Wow! A small town about 16 km from Mysore, where you can wander from temple to temple and visit Tipu Sultan's summer palace (entry costs 200 rupees). A must-visit!

Brindavan Gardens

Beautiful gardens. Aim to arrive around 19:00, when the fountain light show begins. Take a local bus from the central bus station; the fare is 20 rupees.

Horse racing

Twice a week, I think on Wednesdays and Thursdays. A fun experience to watch and be part of.

To sum up

Just enjoy wandering around the city. It's lively, with friendly people and excellent dhabas.
